How the FDA Failed Me

We all get wake-up calls in life, especially about our health. Mine came experientially first, and it has changed my life. I had an undiagnosed GI problem, and felt frustrated that no one looked for the cause, determined the problem, or helped to relieve my symptoms. In fact, I later learned that doctors had prescribed things years earlier which set me up to develop this problem! Finally a simple but rarely used diagnostic test focused my attention on  bacterial overgrowth, and I began investigating.

Though this was unrelated to my illness, one day when I was sick at home, I came across some information that changed my perspective forever. I began reading the information provided by the Environmental Working Group at their website “Skin Deep”. I will never forget this day when I learned about the harmful ingredients in almost every product we use on our skin.  I realized that the FDA approved everyday products for safe use which contain known carcinogens, disrupt hormones, and cause birth defects. I thought the purpose of the FDA was to prevent such harm, not promote it!  I was horrified and felt betrayed. Yes, I had been naive, but I doubt I’m alone.

Despite the availability of products which are much less harmful, the FDA has given their stamp of approval to dangerous products, with disastrous consequences. I was shocked that not only powerful drug companies, but federal agencies charged with protecting and promoting public health, could be so deceitful to a trusting, innocent people. Once again, it all comes down to money and power.

Talenti Gelato is exquisite!

I tasted the most exquisite gelato tonight, and I found it at the grocery store (at Fresh Market, I think). It is unbelievably delicious! I haven’t tasted gelato, or any frozen dessert for that matter, this good since…well, since I was in Italy. According to “Entrepreneur”, “The (gelato) company claims as its source of inspiration Bernando Buontalenti, a famed Florentine artist and architect with a penchant for fine food.” I believe it. They use the finest ingredients, such as fresh fruit and nuts, real blocks of Belgian chocolate, and hormone-free milk. I can’t wait to try out all their flavors!

Discovery of self through Alexander Technique

The things that I discover about myself delight me, even if they are difficult psychological truths – difficult to accept or to grasp. I am learning from my body through Alexander lessons. What I learn is often novel and unique to me…and it usually makes me laugh! There are times when my body is the seat of wisdom; and other times when my body is merely holding on to a habit that makes no sense at all (anymore).  So today I was giggling about all the little ways that I try to get out of the way. So who decided that I was in the way? That would be me….(existential laughter).

Inventive adaptations for computer users

I enjoy thinking of new inventions and often wish someone would implement my ideas. Garrison Keillor’s show sparked just such an idea this morning. We all spend so much time in front of computer screens now;  certainly the passivity of this activity alone may have consequences for us, both in terms of  health and socializing.  Imagine if there could actually be some health benefit! You’ve heard of “bright light therapy” for those who suffer from seasonal affective disorder (SAD) during the long winter months? So wouldn’t it be neat if  a computer screen (or a TV, for that matter) came equipped with an optional therapy light that would do double duty while you sit there soaking up the rays?

Surely we have the technological capacity to pursue this. And why not apply science in ways that provide benefit to humans and the earth?!

Eat wild salmon, or no salmon at all…

You probably heard that cold-water fish, such as salmon, mackeral, tuna, and  herring are good for your health because they are good sources of omega-3 fatty acids.  This also makes them great anti-inflammatory foods.  So it was quite a shock to me when I found out that I was better off eating no salmon at all than consuming farm-raised salmon. It turns out that the farm-raised variety is actually an inflammatory food because it contains a smaller proportion of omega-3’s to omega-6’s, unlike its wild relative.  So you simply don’t get the benefit of increasing your omega-3 fatty acids with farmed salmon. This is one time that it’s worth it to spend the extra money. I think the fish differ because of what they eat. And there you have it…the poor fish have the same problem that we do…dealing with unfortunate dietary choices and toxins in the environment!

Notes:

  • When eating farm-raised salmon, peel off the skin before cooking to reduce the ontaminants from what the fish has consumed.

    Brain Plasticity

I saw an amazing show recently on PBS which entailed a discussion of recent findings in the area of brain plasticity. It was fascinating! The scientist talked about the process of plasticity and how the brain can either shrink or grow. Often in the elderly there is shrinkage due to the lack of learning new things or challenges. He talked about how this could lead to a person having more trouble walking and being vulnerable to falls. It starts subtly with the person thinking about the possibility of falling, and this invites the person to look down at the ground or at their feet while walking. This is not natural. When we are babies and learning to walk, we are not looking at our feet! We look up! We want to go, to move, and we can’t wait to get there. This movement affects structures of the brain and we learn to walk effortlessly, looking straight ahead. Looking down at our feet reverses this process and alters the brain structures again – unlearning critical things we had learned so early in life.

    Responsibility

As a baby boomer (and enjoying some of the privileges of belonging to a dominant group in our society), I grew up believing that the government and its agencies would protect all of us. I got a rude awakening about 2 years ago when a friend directed me to the Skin Deep website to read about the contents of products we use every day on our bodies. I had learned through my association with Usana that  most products (e.g., hand cream, toothpaste, cleansers, body lotion, etc.) contain preservatives or parabens which are harmful when absorbed into our bodies. However, Usana has developed a patented self-preserving technology such that no chemical preservatives are added to the ingredients of Usana’s Sense skin-care products. I did not understand the significance of this information until I visited the Skin Deep site. Most everything we use on our skin contains ingredients which are hazardous to our health! There are a handful of companies who have signed a special compact in which they promise to exclude hazardous ingredients, but I had never heard of most of these companies (except Usana :) ). Look for “compact signers” if you visit the site. [You will see that Usana Health Sciences is a compact signer but their products are not listed in the Skin Deep database so they won't appear if you do a search.]  I was shocked, and I felt betrayed by the FDA and the US government. If you haven’t already reached this conclusion, you may now be wondering how I could be so naive. Well I am not naive anymore, and I’m glad I woke up. It takes a long time for these hazardous materials to accumulate in our bodies and begin to exert an effect, but then it’s often too late! Now I am watchful about what I put on my skin (deodorant, lotion, cleansers, etc.) as well as what I eat. We all need to pay attention because the FDA is allowing these harmful materials as if there is no alternative. The alternative does not even necessarily need to be more expensive. The alternative will also help keep the earth clean as well as our bodies. It took me a long time to get here, but I finally understand more about the personal responsibility of living. It’s up to me, not the FDA or anyone else, to ensure that I am taking care of myself and the earth.

Does the brand of nutritional supplements really matter?

Does it really make a difference which supplement brands you choose? Definitely!

Do you choose a supplement mostly by price? I did, but then I learned that all supplements are not created equal! So what’s wrong with buying the popular/advertised brands available in the grocery or drugstore?

The answer lies in the complicated business of how nutritional supplements are regulated (differently than medicines). You may have assumed that the bottle contains what it says on the label, but this is not actually guaranteed. However, certain few manufacturers go to the trouble of insuring the quality of their products – for example, Usana abides by a stricter standard in the purity of nutrients, cleanliness and integrity of the manufacturing process, and in its guarantees about what the supplement contains (potency, etc) up until the expiration date. If you want to know more about this, go to my Usana website and look up GMP’s and the difference between pharmaceutical-grade and food guidelines for manufacturing. The less strict GMP’s for food apply to nutritional supplements unless the company holds itself to a higher standard. Makers of supplements are not even required to test absorption rates of nutrients, which is an important factor in whether or not the supplement ingredients reach the intended target in your body. No wonder skeptics think that vitamins are a waste, literally. Even if a supplement dissolves at the proper rate to be utilized by your body, it may not be in a bioavailable form so it still gets wasted. For example, minerals can be very hard for your body to absorb, so the form of the nutrient matters.

I used to go to the store and compare labels looking for the most potent ingredients for my money. I spent a long time reading the labels and then choosing the cheapest bottle that contained the most of certain ingredients. Is this cost effective? I thought so, but I didn’t understand about the importance of synergy and how co-factors affect absorption too. More importantly, is that how you want to approach your health – low cost regardless of quality?

Then there’s the issue of balance. In the past, I searched for individual ingredients in separate bottles – partly because I couldn’t get the right combination that I was seeking in one bottle, but more because I thought I knew better what I needed. While it’s important to become your own health advocate, there is much to learn. Experts now recommend taking broad-spectrum vitamins (including high-potency antioxidants to fight free radicals) and broad-spectrum minerals. It’s also important that these supplements be scientifically formulated and synergistically balanced. This is not accomplished by picking and choosing certain ingredients! Do you really want to get more for your money? High quality supplements, such as those made by Usana, are formulated for greater bioavailability than cheaper mass-produced vitamins/minerals. This is because they are science-based and employ better manufacturing processes. Look for USP standards that are used by reputable companies when comparing supplements.

As Dr. Ladd McNamara says, “Nutritional supplements are a science, and the manufacturing of these supplements must be approached that way. This makes all the difference in how the supplements affect your body and cells; the difference between “wasting your money” and TRUE HEALTH!”

Quality manufacturers are few, so here just a few things to look for from your supplement brand, according to Ladd McNamara, MD:

“Pharmaceutical-grade manufacturing (vs. food-grade): Most supplements are made to the standards that apply to your pizza: “as long as it doesn’t hurt you, it is safe for consumption.” Pharmaceutical-grade GMP (good manufacturing practices) is a standardized process that ensures the quality of the supplements. This can be verified by third parties (see next section).

U.S. Pharmocopeia: Make sure the supplement manufacturer adheres to the U.S. Pharmocopeia Standards of Production, that includes dissolution. If the products cannot dissolve in a timely manner within your stomach they cannot effectively be absorbed.

100% Potency Guaranteed: It is shocking the number of brands (name brands) that do not contain the amount of ingredients stated on the bottle. Studies from Yale New Haven Hospital and Tufts University Hospital have shown that many brands not only contain less than the stated amount of ingredients (from 50% of the listed ingredients, down to 0% in some cases), they are also made with the wrong ratios of vitamins and minerals to each other, and are missing some ingredients altogether. Always look for the guarantee of potency.

Athlete Guarantee: Most Olympic and professional athletes will not take ANYTHING, let alone supplements, out of fear of being disqualified for banned substances. The brand that we use and recommend carries a one million dollar guarantee that no banned substances could ever be traced back to their products. Many Olympic and professional athletes are using our products with confidence, and experiencing noticeable differences in their performances.

    Third-Party Verfication: (see next section).

Safety: Iron can accumulate in the body and cause heart and liver damage, let alone death. Health care providers should monitor iron levels and make recommendations. One should never take iron without the supervision of their health care provider. Vitamin A can be toxic at higher levels (to the liver) as well as cause birth defects. Beta carotene is the preferred “pro-vitamin A” supplement, as the body converts beta carotene into vitamin A as the body requires. These are just two of many supplement facts that quality manufacturers take into account.

Who is manufacturing the products? Does the supplier (the distributor) manufacture their own products, or does some huge conglomerate manufacture brand X one day, brand Y another, and brand Z on yet another day? If the distributor/supplier does not manufacture their own products it is very difficult to maintain quality control (from ingredients to end product distribution).

Quality Ingredients: Manufacturers of supplements buy their ingredients from suppliers. Not all suppliers are the same. Most brands provide ingredients of low quality, low potency, and low purity. This is very inexpensive, and many manufactures prefer the inexpensive ingredients because they can put their products on the shelf at a low cost and still maintain a high profit margin. Quality vitamin, mineral, and antioxidant ingredients come with certificates of analysis, and are certified to be potent and pure. If you don’t start with quality ingredients you cannot end up with a quality end product.” (http://www.totalwellnessnetwork.com/nutritional-supplementation.html#3)

The good news is that Usana Health Sciences meets all of these (above) criteria! Check it out – click on the link to the right or contact me. Usana’s prices are surprisingly affordable – partly due to efficient marketing and distribution methods, as well as the founder’s values and commitment to health.

    Music affects our perceptions

More connections between music and our perceptions…and wine.  I read an article in Parade today about “Subliminal Advertising” – the author explains how the tempo of music played in a store has an impact on the length of time people spend shopping there.  Probably true – for me, at least.  The assumption is that a shopper who spends more time in a store is also more likely to buy something from that store, so a store owner may want to play music with a tempo slower than the human heartbeat.  I think this is fascinating!  I sure hope it doesn’t give music a bad reputation, but it does make you think.  The article went on to say that shoppers bought more German wine on days when German music was being played, and bought more French wine while listening to French music.  I’m afraid I would still choose the French wine most of the time, but if they’re playing slow, pretty music I might stick around to give all the wines a lot of consideration.  I think it must work both ways – some music has an undesirable impact on our perceptions/behavior.  I am reminded of how I was driven to avoid a certain store until they changed their light bulbs because the lights made such a loud buzz before they burned out.  I couldn’t bear to be in there!  This makes me wonder about making a lot of noise before dying…but that’s another topic.

What’s the fuss about Vitamin D?

It is critical for you to know that, according to Ladd McNamera, MD:

“there are well over 89 medical studies showing that high vitamin D blood levels (which can only be obtained by supplementing with more than 400 IU/day …) reduce nearly all cancers, including cancers of the colon, rectum, breast, and prostate (some as much as 50%).”

Read more about Vitamin D at Ladd McNamera’s website. Then come back here to see what Usana is doing about it. In recent years, Usana added Vitamin D to the fish oil. Why?  In Usana’s “Ask the Scientists” feature, it explains:

“Many experts now believe that most people are not getting enough vitamin D. In addition, vitamin D is not found naturally in significant amounts in fish oil or fish oil products. Both omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D are essential to the diet, and fish oil is an ideal delivery medium for vitamin D (because vitamin D is fat soluble).
Based on a careful consideration of all these factors, we made the decision to integrate vitamin D into BiOmega.”
